Switzerland aims to achieve net zero by 2050. However, not all greenhouse gas emissions are preventable, so measures are needed to remove CO2 from the air as well for its transportation, usage and long-term storage. At the First Swiss CO2 Congress due to be held in Bern, the Swiss economy will showcase how it is facing these challenges, pursuing developments abroad and developing solutions for Switzerland.
Together with its cooperation partners from the private sector, cemsuisse, scienceindustries, Ziegelindustrie Schweiz, IGEB sowie economiesuisse, the Association of the Swiss Natural Gas Industry (VSG) is launching the First Swiss CO2 Congress as a platform for dialogue between practitioners, business, science, political actors and the government.
Not all greenhouse gas emissions can be avoided, such as in the cement or chemical industries and in waste incineration plants. Carbon Capture, Use and Storage (CCUS) is a key element in achieving climate targets. CCUS involves a combination of different technologies and processes to reduce CO2 emissions. The carbon emitted can then be processed or placed into long-term storage. The development of a CCUS system in Switzerland is associated with numerous unresolved questions and is a project with a horizon stretching into the decades.
At this Congress, the VSG and its cooperation partners will explain how the economy is addressing the challenges, the experience acquired in doing so and additional questions that are arising along the way. Renowned speakers from Switzerland and abroad will describe the political framework conditions that are essential for the successful development of CCUS. Unresolved questions will be discussed with participants, and practical concepts will be developed for both CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilization) and CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage). We look forward to welcoming you.
